Harmony Horse Trials was created initially through the efforts of Alan Law and Robert and Tracey Dickson following the demise of the long running Harwood Horse Trials. The name ‘Harmony” was to focus on the desire to have an Event where there would be harmony among the organizers, with the volunteers and officials, and most importantly between horses and riders. With the generous support of Don and Olga Martz, at the time the owners of Windedge Farm (now Beaulieu), and the expertise of an army of volunteers – many of whom had previously helped with the Harwood Event – the first event was run on June 21-22nd 1997. Key individuals at the presentation of that first running included Margaret Clayton, Trish and Peter Oswald, Eve Law, Claude and Linda Denis and Simon Addey-Jibb. Rhoda Kerr must be singled out as someone who volunteered at the beginning and is still active with the competition today. Sue Ockendon was our first Technical Delegate and Hugh Morshead was the original Designer of the Starter to Preliminary courses. That first show saw approximately 75 horses compete and included a Roads & Tracks section for the Training and Preliminary horses. Over the years the event has made changes, including moving to a mid-August date, and has evolved into one the circuit’s most popular competitions with an average of about 125 horses competing.
